Key Differences between L185DRS & L186DRS

The new L186DRS is essential the same as the outgoing L185DRS with three key differences. The new L186DRS is slightly smaller (444mm - 475mm W), HD Freeiew Tuner & the capability to record to a USB Flash Drive from the Satellite Tuner as well as the Freeview Tuner. The L185DRS can only record from the Freeview Tuner that is standard def but gives excellent picture quality superior to many competitors 12v TV's.

Avtex L185DRS - Overview

Launched Spring 2012 the Avtex L185DRS 12v TV/DVD Combi is one of the latest generation of "Ultra Slim" TV's designed and manufactured by Avtex specifically for use in a Boat, Caravan or Motorhome. The key difference compared to the sister L185DR model and the significance of the letter "S" is a built-in High Definition Free To Air Satellite Receiver.

Avtex L185DRS - Description

The Avtex L185DRS with an 18.5" HD LED/LCD screen is the miidle size wise model in the DRS range with a Triple Tuning System. The L185DRS has a conventional Multi-standard Analogue Terrestrial Tuner, a DVB-T Digital Terrestrial Tuner for watching "Freeview" in the UK and the Continental equivalent whilst touring Europe and the latest DVB-S2 High Defeinition Free to Air Satellite Receiver. The inclusion of an integrated HD Satellite Receiver allows a wide variety of programming to be watched throughout the UK & is particulary useful if you regulary camp in areas where the Terrestrial Freeview Broadcasts are difficult to receive due to local conditions. Terrestrial Broadcasts coming from the horizon can be obsucured by trees and reception can be problamatic in valleys. The Satellite signal coming down from the sky at an angle can quite often be received in exactly the same location where Freeview is difficult or impossible to receive. The use of Satellite on the Continent also allows you to watch British TV where an aerial would get you the local TV programmes. The integrated HD Satellite Receiver is "FTA (Free To Air)" allowing hundreds of un-encrypted TV Broadcasts to be watched. If however you wish to watch a HD SKY subscription channel you would still need an external HD SKY integrated receiver/decoder connected to one of the two HDMI sockets. Please note that the L185DRS being of such high quality does not have Standard Definition sockets for connecting Standard Definition external sources only HD sources can be connected.

The other difference between the still current L185DR and the L185DRS is the DRS is housed in an "Ultra Slim" style cabinet with a front glass panel as first seen on the larger 21.5" L215DR launched late 2011. The 18.5" & 21.5" Avtex models are supplied mounted on a pedestal. The use of the pedestal allows the TV to be used vertically compared to the smaller 16" sister model the W164DRS that has a detachable rear mounted leg that means it allways has to lean backwards slightly when used freestanding. The pedestal approach gives a better picture when the TV is located relatively high compared to your seating position as in many new Caravans and Motorhomes. The pedestal is detachable and there are standard VESA mounting points for those who would prefer to mount their TV on a bracket.

The L185DRS when used for receiving Terrestrial Broadcasts through an Aerial has the advantage of the Unique one button tuning system (Avtex Quick Tune) that has a distinctive large orange button in the middle of the remote control for simple stress free set up when you arrive on site. Simply align your aerial to the local transmitter and press the AQT button where the L185DRS will seek out the channels and put them in the correct order for you. The set is Digital Tick Approved to the latest specification meaning unlike many competitors TV's it has something else very useful when moving around to different locations, specifically "Target Region Tuning". If you are in-between transmitters as many camp sites are and the TV can receive two or more transmissions it will give you the option to select which transmitter.

There is a built-in DVD player that can be used for watching movies or slide shows of images and of course listening to Audio CD's. The USB socket allows playback of media (photos, films etc) stored on a pen drive or external hard drive. You can also use the USB socket to record/pause live TV from the built-in "Freeview" digital tuner but not an external source or the analogue tuner. If you wish to use this facility please be aware that the television can not read a hard drive with a capacity of more than 250Gb unless it is partioned in to 250Gb or smaller sections.

Please note that the latest generation of TV's are significantly slimmer than previous models. If you intend to mount your L185DRS on a VESA wall bracket please ensure that you use bolts of an appropriate length as using bolts that are too long may damage the TV. We can supply short bolts if required, please contact us.

Avtex L185DRS - Connecting to 12v circuit

The Avtex L185DRS is supplied with a 12v lead terminated in a cigar type plug. The cigar plug houses a glass fuse to protect the TV. If you should need to replace the fuse this can be done by carefully rotating the end of the plug. This plug should not be removed as your TV will not have the protection of the fuse and the warranty will be invalidated. If your vehicle has a different type of socket you should purchase an adapter either from us or your local caravan dealer. Details of our adapters can be found in the accessories section.

When connecting the L185DRS TV you should follow the same safety princple as connecting your hook up lead, when setting up connect the TV end first, wall socket end second. When packing away disconnect the wall socket end first, TV end second. It is also important to completely turn the TV off with the main ON/OFF switch situated on the bottom panel rather than just turning to standby as if the main switch is left "ON" when you next connect the TV there will be a surge of power that may blow the fuse. Whilst the L185DRS only uses a small amount of power in standby, turning the main switch "OFF" will also save your valuable battery power when rallying / wild camping.
