In October 2012 the R.O.I. turned off Analogue Terrestrial TV Broadcasts and therefore now only have a Digital TV service. The Broadcast Standard chosen by the Irish Authorities is different to the rest of Europe and as such any Standard Definition TV's bought in the UK or else where in Europe will not work in Ireland.
You can watch British and European programmes via satellite whilst in R.O.I. but not RTE.
If you have a normal TV and want to watch Irish Broadcasters such as RTE then you will need to purchase an Irish set top box in Ireland. Thier equivalent to Feeview is called Saorview.
The Avtex L185DR 12v TV/DVD Combi is one of the latest generation of "Ultra Slim" HD Ready sets designed and manufactured by Avtex specifically for use in a Boat, Caravan or Motorhome operating from either a 12v leisure battery or mains hook up.
The Avtex L185DR and L185TR were the first Avtex models with an " Ultra Slim " cabinet that coincided with a change to being mounted on a pedestal. The use of the pedestal allows the L185DR to be used vertically compared to the previous W193DR and smaller W164DR models using a rear mounted leg. The rear leg means those models allways have to lean backwards slightly. This new approach gives a better picture when the TV is located relatively high as the nature of LCD technology is that it doesn't give a good picture when viewed from below.
Other improvements introduced in this model are lighter weight and lower power consumption. Traditionally sets of this size have used over 3A on 12 volts. When we first tested the L185DR we measured the current with an input voltage of 12.5v (approx half charged battery) at 1.9A. This makes the Avtex L185DR more efficient than many competitors smaller TV's and is therefore ideal for those who like to wild camp and rally.
Being designed and manufactured from the ground up to be used in a boat, caravan or motorhome the L185DR has superior quality components and excellent build quality to cope with the increased vibration and harshness encountered on todays roads. It is designed to be used with variable input voltages and can even work in a 24v truck or truck based vehicle like horseboxes. Not only is this superb model made for portable use it is made to a specification, not down to a price. The key component in any TV is the screen. Most people are not aware that like many things in life LCD screens come in different qualities and Avtex use the best available, an A+. By comparison many major high street brands would not use a screen of this quality at the same price point. The advantages of using an A+ screen are firstly a guarantee that every single pixel will be working correctly. It is possible to buy an expensive TV to find one or two pixels stuck in a particular colour and be told "sorry that's within specification, you'll have to live with it". In the unlikely event this should happen with an Avtex it would be replaced. One of the other advantages are better veiwing angles and this is particularly important in the leisure market as most of us sit either side of our caravans/motorhomes both looking at an acute angle compared to our houses where we angle the TV to our seating position. The screen also offers HD resolution and produces vibrant colours and great contrast with both standard and high definition pictures. The built-in tuners are standard definition but there are two HDMI sockets for connecting an external HD source although many people won't bother as the standard def picture is so good. This TV also offers superior sound quality compared to competitors sets and the FM "transmitter" allows you to tune an FM radio in to the sound of the Avtex creating a simulated surround sound effect or just higher volumes and greater bass response.
The L185DR has a built-in DVD player that can be used for watching movies, slide shows of images and listening to Audio CD's. There is also a USB socket that allows playback of media stored on a pen drive or external hard drive. You can record/pause live TV from the built-in "Freeview" digital tuner but not an external source or the analogue tuner. If you wish to use this facility please be aware that the television can not read a hard drive with a capacity of more than 250Gb unless it is partioned in to 250Gb or smaller sections.
One of the advantages of an Avtex TV in this specialist market is ease of use. Most peoples biggest bug bear when camping is keep re-tuning the TV every time you move to a new location. Avtex have developed a Unique one button tuning system (Avtex Quick Tune) that has a distinctive large orange button in the middle of the remote control for simple stress free set up when you arrive on site. Simply align your aerial to the local transmitter and press the AQT button where the L185DR will seek out the channels and put them in the correct order for you. The set is Digital Tick Approved to the latest specification meaning unlike many competitors TV's it has something else very useful when moving around to different locations, specifically "Target Region Tuning". If you are in-between transmitters as many camp sites are the TV will give you the option to select which transmitter. This is particulary useful if for example you are in Shropshire on the Welsh / English border. Whilst I love Wales and have been camping there for nearly fifty years I don't speak Welsh.
Please note that the latest generation of TV's are significantly slimmer than previous models. If you intend to mount your L185DR on a VESA wall bracket please ensure that you use bolts of an appropriate length as using bolts that are too long may damage the TV. We can supply short bolts if required, please contact us.
The Avtex L185DR is supplied with a 12v lead terminated in a cigar type plug. The cigar plug houses a glass fuse to protect the TV. If you should need to replace the fuse this can be done by carefully rotating the end of the plug. This plug should not be removed as your TV will not have the protection of the fuse and the warranty will be invalidated. If your vehicle has a different type of socket you should purchase an adapter either from us or your local caravan dealer. Details of our adapters can be found in the accessories section.
When connecting the L185DR TV you should follow the same safety princple as connecting your hook up lead, when setting up connect the TV end first, wall socket end second. When packing away disconnect the wall socket end first, TV end second. It is also important to completely turn the TV off with the main ON/OFF switch situated on the bottom panel rather than just turning to standby as if the main switch is left "ON" when you next connect the TV there will be a surge of power that may blow the fuse. Whilst the L185DR only uses a small amount of power in standby, turning the main switch "OFF" will also save your valuable battery power when rallying / wild camping.
