In October 2012 the R.O.I. turned off Analogue Terrestrial TV Broadcasts and therefore now only have a Digital TV service. The Broadcast Standard chosen by the Irish Authorities is different to the rest of Europe and as such any Standard Definition TV's bought in the UK or else where in Europe will not work in Ireland.
You can watch British and European programmes via satellite whilst in R.O.I. but not RTE.
If you have a normal TV and want to watch Irish Broadcasters such as RTE then you will need to purchase an Irish set top box in Ireland. Thier equivalent to Feeview is called Saorview.
The Avtex STH1000 is very popular due to its compact size and the versatility of mounting it. There are several methods of using the Avtex STH1000 but by far the most popular is the supplied suction foot with flexible gooseneck. This allows the STH1000 to be secured to clean smooth body work or even a window. The goose neck enables the aerial to be pointed towards the broadcast transmitter (Digital signals are significantly more directional than the old Analogue system). There is also a bracket provided if you wish to permanently mount the STH1000 and a "U" bolt clamp if you would prefer to attach the aerial to a pole/mast (extra height can significantly improve reception in some areas).
The Avtex STH1000 is an active antenna and therefore requires electricity to work albeit only a few milliamps. If you are using an AVTEX 12 Volt TV there is a setting on the on screen menu's to allow the TV to send power up the aerial cable to work the STH1000. If you prefer or are using a TV other than an Avtex there is a power adapter in the box that connects to your 12v leisure battery system via a cigar plug and in turn drops the voltage from 12v to the required 5v. It is imperitive that you do not bypass the cigar plug adapter and connect directly to your 12 volt system.
The Avtex STH1000 Aerial has diamond shaped stainless steel elements allowing reception of both Verically Polarised and Horizontally Polarised signals without the need to turn the aerial through 90deg as with conventional aerials. The elements being stainless steel means the aerial is robost.
