In October 2012 the R.O.I. turned off Analogue Terrestrial TV Broadcasts and therefore now only have a Digital TV service. The Broadcast Standard chosen by the Irish Authorities is different to the rest of Europe and as such any Standard Definition TV's bought in the UK or else where in Europe will not work in Ireland.
You can watch British and European programmes via satellite whilst in R.O.I. but not RTE.
If you have a normal TV and want to watch Irish Broadcasters such as RTE then you will need to purchase an Irish set top box in Ireland. Thier equivalent to Feeview is called Saorview.
The Avtex W164DR launched in the Spring 2011 was the first Avtex using a new "Ultra Slim" cabinet. The improvements over the previous W163DR model that it replaced are lighter weight and even less power consumption. Earlier TV sets of this size have used approx 3A-3.5A on 12v. When testing in a Caravan we have measured this set with an input voltage of 12.5v (approx half charged battery) at 1.7A. This makes the Avtex W164DR ideal for those who like to wild camp or attend rallies.
The W164DR being designed and manufactured specifically for the leisure market has superior quality components and excellent build quality to cope with vibration and harshness encountered on the move. It has also been designed to operate on variable input voltages and can even work up to 28v and therefore can safely be used in a Truck with the engine running.
TV screen manufacturers don't tend to make screens of this size so competitors have to use inferior computer screens. Avtex 16" models have exceptional picture quality because Avtex have a world wide exclusive arrangement with Sony Professional to use a Sony Professional Video Screen as used in Airports and other pro applications. The colours and overall picture are simply stunning, couple this with great sound and you have an awesome portable AV experience. We wouldn't hessitate to recommend this TV not only whilst out camping but also in the house as a second TV in the bedroom, dining room etc.
In true Avtex tradition the W164DR is very straightforward to operate with the one button AQT tuning system now coupled with "Target Region Tuning" allowing you to select what regional transmitter you wish to receive when positioned in between two transmitters. Other functions are easily navigated with the graphical on screen menu system.
If there is nothing on live TV you wish to watch the W164DR has a DVD player located on the right hand side that will play DVD movies, CD-ROMs and Audio CDs. On top of this there is a USB port that can play back pre-recorded material or you can pause/record live TV from the Digital Freeview Tuner. A USB Flash Pen drive or external HDD are required for this (not inc) and the TV supports HDD partions of upto 250Gb.
If you want to connect an external device there are two HDMI sockets for HD sources and a scart socket for standard definition equipment. There is also an earphone socket and if you want more sound options the built-in FM transmitter allows you to tune a radio in to the Avtex for a simulated surround effect or just greater volume.
Please note that the latest generation of TV's are significantly slimmer than previous models. If you intend to mount your W164DR on a VESA wall bracket please ensure that you use bolts of an appropriate length as using bolts that are too long may damage the TV. We can supply short bolts if required, please contact us.
The Avtex W164DR is supplied with a 12v lead terminated in a cigar type plug. The cigar plug houses a glass fuse to protect the TV. If you should need to replace the fuse this can be done by carefully rotating the end of the plug. This plug should not be removed as your TV will not have the protection of the fuse and the warranty will be invalidated. If your vehicle has a different type of socket you should purchase an adapter either from us or your local caravan dealer. Details of our adapters can be found in the accessories section.
When connecting the W164DR TV you should follow the same safety princple as connecting your hook up lead, when setting up connect the TV end first, wall socket end second. When packing away disconnect the wall socket end first, TV end second. It is also important to completely turn the TV off with the main ON/OFF switch situated on the bottom panel rather than just turning to standby as if the main switch is left "ON" when you next connect the TV there will be a surge of power that may blow the fuse. Whilst the W164DR only uses a small amount of power in standby, turning the main switch "OFF" will also save your valuable battery power when rallying / wild camping.
